According to the Transport department they mentioned cancelling the drivers license tender could lead to consequences with the card printer on its last legs of backlogs of renewals growing since January 2025. In the beginning of March 2025 Transport Minister Barbara Creecy initiated legal action to block the awarding of a contract for a new printing machine following investigation into tender process. The country is trying to move to a smart license card which will combat fraud and counterfeiting. Additionally the new drivers license will be produced at a faster rate. According to Outa, the bid would of cost take payers just under R900 million which the Auditor-general stated was inconsistent
